Every country page in this edition repeats a line that used to sound pastoral and is now operational. University-managed housing in year one is not a lifestyle upgrade. It is how students avoid the scam Facebook group, the seven-person basement, and the landlord who never quite registered the contract.
Amsterdam universities have started treating an address as a condition of enrolment. Dublin students describe rent as a second tuition. Munich’s Studentwerk waitlist is a competitive exam. Toronto’s 2023–25 overcrowding is why Canada’s brand took a hit among Indian parents who can actually pay.
What this means: if the university offers a hall, take it, even if a broker on Instagram is cheaper. The cheapest bed is often the most expensive year.
