Indian students: campus is usually safe. Housing bias is the more common problem

Families ask this in Marathi and then swallow it in English: will my child be safe, and will they be treated as less? The honest answer is uneven, which is why our country pages carry a watch level rather than a slogan.

Lower concern, in our current file: Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan (for street safety), Malaysia, Spain and the UAE. That does not mean zero incidents. It means physical violence is rare, institutions generally respond, and the usual Indian complaint is paperwork or rent, not hate.

What this means in practice is unglamorous. Take university housing in year one. Register on MADAD. Save 1800 11 3090 and the local emergency number. Do not treat TikTok as a crime map. And have a parent conversation that names two true things at once: most Indian students complete their degrees without a hate crime, and the ones who do need a newsroom that did not pretend it was impossible.
