QS ranks 1,000 universities. Employers care about a much shorter list

A high employment score at MIT, ETH, TUM, NUS or Imperial is not the same thing as a QS 410 campus with a good Instagram page.

The QS top 1000 is the sampling frame of this newsroom because that is the brief: every country that hosts a ranked university is in scope. It is not a recommendation to apply to all 1,000. Employer reputation and first-destination surveys shrink the list fast.

Employment ratios above 90 percent cluster where you would expect: MIT, Stanford, ETH Zurich, EPFL, Imperial, Cambridge, Oxford, TUM, NUS, NTU, Delft, KAIST. Waterloo’s co-op machine outperforms its headline rank. A taught master’s at a university nobody in Bengaluru or Pune has heard of will not acquire prestige in 12 months of LinkedIn.

What this means: student feedback is surprisingly stable. Workload at the top is the complaint. Isolation at the rest is the complaint. Careers services at US and UK campuses are often better than in much of Europe. Tuition in much of Europe is the careers service.
