At a glance

What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before choosing this degree — clearly and honestly.

What you study

A specialised one-year master of laws — in areas like international, commercial, IP, tech or human-rights law — building on an existing law degree.

Why students choose it

Global law firms and organisations value international specialisation; an LLM can also be a step toward foreign bar qualification.

Who it suits

An LLB graduate seeking specialisation; note that practising abroad needs local bar qualification, which the LLM alone does not give.

* United States: Since 15 September 2026, F-1 students are admitted for a fixed period of stay rather than “duration of status”. Post-study work is 12 months of OPT, plus a 24-month STEM extension for eligible degrees.

* Australia: The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is generally granted for 2 years, and longer for eligible higher degrees. See the Australia country guide.

Careers & salaries

Where this degree leads, and an honest note on the outlook — earnings vary widely by destination, role and the economy.

An LLM specialises rather than re-qualifies you — the right destination depends on where you intend to practise.

Strong for specialists at global firms, but practising abroad requires local bar exams. Clarify your goal before choosing a jurisdiction.

Licensing & registration. Completing the degree does not automatically guarantee professional registration. Licensing requirements differ by country and profession — for example the relevant medical, nursing, pharmacy, legal or psychology council — and often include a licensing examination and a language test. In India, registration is with the relevant council (for example the NMC, Indian Nursing Council, Pharmacy Council of India or Bar Council of India).

Employment demand varies by country, occupation and economic conditions; where official projections exist they are cited here.

Earnings vary significantly by country, occupation, experience and economic conditions. Salary figures shown on this portal should be read together with the destination, occupation, data year and official labour-market source. Any INR equivalent is indicative and changes with exchange rates.
