At a glance
What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.
The education
Strong in electronics, semiconductors and engineering, with many English-taught master's and rich scholarships.
The true cost
Low tuition and living costs. The MOE Taiwan Scholarship pays a monthly living allowance of NT$15,000 (undergraduate) or NT$20,000 (master’s/doctoral), plus up to NT$40,000 per semester toward tuition and fees, for a capped duration. The MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (NT$28,000 a month) supports Mandarin study. Many universities also offer scholarships.
Safety & visa
Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. After graduation you can extend your stay for up to 2 years to work; demand for chip talent is high.

After you graduate
Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.
From 1 January 2026, eligible international graduates (associate degree or higher) can extend their residence after graduation for one year and, if needed, once more — up to two years in total. During this extension you can work full-time, part-time or as an intern without a separate work permit. After two years, you need an appropriate formal employment/residence route to keep working.
Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.
- 1 year, then once more if needed — up to 2 years
- No separate work permit during the extension
- Full-time, part-time or internship
- After 2 years, a formal employment/residence route is needed
Visa, work & money rules
The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.
Student visa
If you study for more than 180 days, you need a Resident Visa. You then apply for your ARC at the National Immigration Agency within 30 days after entry. Shorter courses use a Visitor Visa.
Visa & permit fees
A Resident Visa for study costs US$66 for an overseas single-entry application; the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center may collect the approved local-currency equivalent. The Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) costs NT$1,000 per year for a foreign student.
Work while studying
You need a work permit to work while studying, and you may not work before you get it. Outside summer and winter vacations, you can work a maximum of 20 hours a week; this 20-hour weekly cap does not apply during summer and winter vacations.
Family & dependants
Your spouse and qualifying minor children can apply for family-reunion residence while you hold valid residence. For a spouse, your ARC/residence permit must generally have more than six months’ validity remaining. Documents issued abroad generally need authentication by the relevant Taiwan overseas mission.
Proof of funds
For a student Resident Visa, you must show proof of financial support that covers at least six consecutive months of living needs. BOCA does not publish one single nationwide fixed NT-dollar minimum for all applicants.
Health insurance
You enrol in Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI), generally after six months of continuous residence, through your institution. Universities typically provide group insurance during the initial period. NHI enrolment continues into any post-graduation extension.
