Australia has not shut the door. Some student visas just wait longer

Ministerial Direction 115 is not a visa ban. It is an order that tells officers which offshore Student (subclass 500) applications to look at first, against Australia’s 2026 National Planning Level. Universities that stay under about 80 percent of their target move faster. Universities that go past about 115 percent wait. Research postgraduate applications have a different priority. Many Indian applicants read this as a “cap”. It is a traffic light.

The document that actually fails files is the Genuine Student statement. Officers have seen a year of generic essays about “world-class education and a multicultural society”. Your answers have to connect this course, this university, this career plan, and these bank funds. A Group of Eight STEM file with real savings still looks like a student. A vague business master’s at a high-risk provider looks like a work visa in disguise.

What this means: the Temporary Graduate (485) visa is still the post-study work product. How long it lasts depends on your qualification, and sometimes on whether you studied in a regional area. It is not PR. Skills lists and state nomination are a later conversation, not the first one.
