At a glance
What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.
The education
Public-university fees scale with family income (ISEE) — many Indian students pay little. Strong in design and engineering.
The true cost
Among Europe's cheapest, with regional scholarships (DSU) covering fees, housing and meals for eligible students.
Safety & visa
Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. A 9–12 month post-study residence permit (attesa occupazione) is available to look for work.
Top universities
A selection of universities popular with Maharashtra students, with indicative tuition.
After you graduate
Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.
After you graduate, you can convert your study permit into a residence permit to look for work or become self-employed (attesa occupazione) for 9–12 months. Once you are employed, you convert it into a work permit.
Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.
- 9–12 months to seek work or self-employment
- Convert to a work permit once employed
- ISEE income-based low fees
- Regional DSU scholarships
Visa, work & money rules
The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.
Student visa
You pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal and get a Declaration of Value (DOV) or a CIMEA statement of comparability for your qualification. Then you apply for the study visa at the Italian mission.
Visa & permit fees
The national type-D study visa costs €50.
Work while studying
You can work part-time up to 20 hours a week (up to 1,040 hours a year), subject to your permit conditions.
Family & dependants
Family reunification is available to holders of a qualifying residence permit who meet income, accommodation and documentation requirements. A study permit alone may not satisfy these conditions.
Proof of funds
The financial requirement for 2026/27 is €10,179.85 for the year. This is a visa requirement, separate from actual living costs.
