At a glance
What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.
The education
Leading universities offer English-taught programmes in business, engineering and the sciences. Scholarships include KNB (Kemitraan Negara Berkembang) for developing-country students at degree level, university scholarships, and Darmasiswa (mainly language and arts, non-degree). Check eligibility and intake on the official KNB and Darmasiswa portals.
The true cost
Low tuition and very affordable living, especially outside Jakarta.
Safety & visa
Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel and follow regional advisories. A student KITAS does not let you work: you cannot work full-time or draw a salary from an Indonesian company on student status. Any paid work needs separate work authorisation.

After you graduate
Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.
Indonesia has no dedicated post-study job-search visa. To work after graduation, you need an employer to sponsor a work permit (RPTKA) and the matching work-purpose KITAS. Investor, Second-Home and remote-worker visas are not ordinary graduate routes.
Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.
- No post-study job-search visa
- Employer-sponsored work permit (RPTKA) and work KITAS
- Student KITAS gives no right to work
- KNB, university and Darmasiswa scholarships
Visa, work & money rules
The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.
Student visa
For higher education, you use Indonesia’s current E30B Higher Education Student Visa (a Limited Stay Visa). After admission and immigration processing, you hold the matching ITAS/e-ITAS residence status.
Visa & permit fees
The E30B formal higher-education visa and stay fee is Rp6,000,000 for 1 year and Rp8,500,000 for 2 years. Where the 4-year formal-education option is issued, it is Rp12,000,000.
Family & dependants
Eligible family members use Indonesia’s family Limited Stay Visa routes, not your E30B student status. A spouse of an ITAS/ITAP holder may use the E31B family route. An unmarried biological child under 18 joining an ITAS/ITAP-holding parent may use the applicable child-family route. Family status does not by itself give the right to work.
Proof of funds
You must show proof of living funds, usually through your own or a sponsor’s bank statements for the previous three months, with at least US$2,000 or the equivalent available under current immigration guidance. This is an immigration financial requirement, not your actual annual living-cost budget.
Health insurance
Your student visa and residence application needs health-insurance evidence that meets Indonesian immigration requirements. Follow the exact insurance specification in the current E30B application and from your university. Do not assume BPJS coverage is automatically provided to international students.

With the default assumptions (₹7L tuition and ₹5L living costs a year for 2 years, a 10% scholarship and a ₹15L starting salary), total investment is ₹23L and the indicative payback period is 2.3 years.
