After you graduate

Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.

If you graduate from a Danish higher-education programme, you may be able to use the establishment card or other job-search provisions to stay and look for work after graduation, subject to SIRI conditions.

Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.

Visa, work & money rules

The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.

Visa & permit fees

The application fee for a residence and work permit for study is DKK 3,060 (2026).

Work while studying

Non-EU students can work up to 90 hours a month from September to May, and full-time in June, July and August.

Family & dependants

If you are in a state-approved higher-education programme, your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children under 18 can apply for accompanying-family residence permits, subject to SIRI’s conditions. Different restrictions apply to certain programmes that are not state-approved, including applications made on or after 2 May 2025.

Proof of funds

You must document funds to support yourself — broadly the equivalent of the Danish state education grant (SU) rate per month for the study period. This is a visa requirement, separate from actual living costs.

Health insurance

Denmark’s public healthcare is based on residence. Once you register in the Civil Registration System (CPR), you are entitled to public healthcare and receive the national health-insurance card (the ‘yellow card’). Arrange cover for any period before you register.
