At a glance
What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.
The education
Studying in Czech is tuition-free at public universities; English programmes charge moderate fees. Strong engineering tradition.
The true cost
Very affordable living, especially outside Prague. A budget-friendly route into central Europe.
Safety & visa
Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. After graduation, you can switch to an employment card or long-term residence for employment once you have qualifying work.
Top universities
A selection of universities popular with Maharashtra students, with indicative tuition.
After you graduate
Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.
After you graduate, you can apply to change to an employment card, or to long-term residence for the purpose of employment, once you have qualifying work. When your family can join you depends on the residence held by the family member sponsoring them.
Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.
- Switch to an employment card once you have qualifying work
- Or long-term residence for employment
- Free tuition if studying in Czech
- Low living costs
Visa, work & money rules
The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.
Visa & permit fees
The long-stay study visa or residence application fee is CZK 2,500.
Work while studying
If you study in an accredited programme at a recognised institution, you can work without a separate work permit. Study must remain your main purpose.
Family & dependants
Family reunification is available once the sponsor has held residence for the required qualifying period, subject to means and accommodation requirements.
Proof of funds
You must prove funds calculated from the statutory subsistence formula for the length of your stay, based on the official subsistence minimum — for example, about CZK 78,250 for a six-month stay and CZK 115,810 for a twelve-month stay. This is a visa requirement, separate from actual living costs.
